Oshidori Sustainability Plan

Nagasaki, Japan // in collaboration with AB Consulting and Mañosa Co.

Mandarin ducks, oshidori as they are called in Japan, mate for life. The Oshidori are prominent figures in Japanese culture, symbolizing a harmonious marriage and partnership. In the same way, the inspiring story of Oshidori is the core concept of the Oshidori Development design proposal- a harmonious partnership between Nagasaki and Oshidori: local and global / cultural heritage and international exchange / sustainability and technology.  Envisioned as a revival of Nagasaki as a centre of trade and culture, the development builds around the existing architecture and facilities.

01 // Plan + Analysis

Working in collaboration with AB Consulting and a team of international planners and architects, LOCI was part of the sustainability visioning Team that were responsible for strategizing sustainable initiatives and green technologies for a 45-acre development, including theme parks, hotels, marinas, park land, shopping malls, transit networks, pedestrian realm, casinos and a convention centre.

02 // Visualize

From an outdoor private and public space perspective, design and programming will plan for a wide range of performances, exhibitions and events.  Various scenarios will be mapped out and simulated to help inform the function and scale of these spaces.  Extensive research, literature review, and site visits to existing outdoor exhibition/performance spaces will allow the design team to identify characteristics of the successful spaces while avoiding characteristics of the poorly functioning spaces.

03 // Sustainability + Universal Design + Multi-culturalism

Universal design approach will be a fundamental design approach to all landscape areas and public spaces within the development.  We aim to apply the 7 principles of Universal Design very early on in the conceptual phase to ensure these objectives are carried through the project.  Our believe is simple: the project must always consider the diverse needs and abilities for all potential users at all levels of the design and construction process.  Environmentally conscious design will also be a fundamental design principle from early concept stages through to construction build-out.  Our goal for this site is to push the boundaries of sustainable and ecological design, to integrate these principles into the built form at both the system-level as well as the detailed design level.  Strategies include but are not limited to: promoting visual green architecture (green screens, green roofs) to educate visitors and to reduce heat island affect; maximizing permeable landscapes and tree canopy to enhance rain water absorption, retention and re-use on site; promote local flora and fauna to facilitate ecological connections and habitat for wildlife; reduce, re-use and recycle materials during and after construction, using locally-sourced and durable materials wherever possible.  Regarding multi-culturalism, our goal would be to celebrate the diversified history of Nagasaki, at the local, regional and national level.  Outdoor spaces will be programmed to accommodate a range of seasonal events that celebrate the site's past history, and to ensure these stories are told in a create and unique way.  The site's culture past will also inform and inspire the various materials used on-site to enhance place identity and "ownership" for all users.
