Fort Rodd Hill

Victoria, BC // in collaboration with Ratio Architecture

LOCI is proud to work with Ratio Architecture in redesigning the historic Fort Rodd Hill National Historic Site. Named after the late admiral John Rashleigh Rodd, this historic site served as a coastal artillery fort to protect Victoria and the Esquimalt Naval Base. Just a short walk away from historic Fisgard Lighthouse, Fort Rodd Hill was Britain’s only naval station on the western seaboard between North and South America in the late 1800’s.

01 // Site

LOCI aims to create a learning and interactive visitor experience that fully captures the cultural importance of the site.  The iconic Garry Oak ecosystem upon which the Fort was built, has slowly re-claimed it’s footprint – something we want to celebrate as a key narrative of the new Park.

02 // Plan + Analysis

LOCI is leading the landscape redesign of the park entry, main plaza area, and interactive play zone that allows youths and toddlers to experience both exploration and learning.  The military history of the site will serve as a strong thematic for materiality, scale of spaces, and types of interactive equipment.
